1000 Gervais
Columbia, SC
As one of the original urban buildings on Gervais Street dating back to the birth of the Vista, and as one of the last empty storefronts on the block, 1000 Gervais provides an exciting opportunity for enriching the fabric of Columbia’s “hub for arts and entertainment.” The building’s appearance has changed several times throughout its history due to a series of renovations. Now, with access to a single black-and-white photograph to tell the story of its original character, the design team is restoring the look and feel of the original storefront, along with recreating the protective awning and historic entablature above. Utilization of historic tax credits makes this restoration possible, so that the building may be enjoyed by the next generation of Columbians in its newest form - a mixed-use building with commercial space on the ground floor and dwellings above.
