The Schlosburg Building
Chester, SC
This significant “catalyst project” in the historic commercial district of Chester provides an adaptive reuse of a historic department store building dating to the 1920’s. Founded by the Schlosburg brothers of Rock Hill, the store was a substantial part of downtown Chester for many years. A renovation in the 1950’s introduced a mid-century modern aesthetic with significant changes to the original storefront. Eventually, the building was turned over to storage, then abandoned for over 30 years prior to the current renovation.
The renewed space provides two tenant spaces at street level, one of which is slated to be a coffee shop, with residential units above. Under the direction of the owner, the building is returning to form–recapturing its historical character through replacement and modification of the storefront, utilization of glass block to evoke the feel of the historical prism glass that once enhanced the facade, and integration of custom, corner-mounted sign which takes inspiration from the original signage of the building’s heyday
