Kimbrel's Building
Chester, SC
Following the revitalization of the Schlossburg Building just down the street from this site, Saluda Architecture is leading the design on the adaptive reuse of the historic Kimbrell’s Building. Kimbrell’s sits at the top of The Hill at Monument Square, at the site of the “Aaron Burr Rock” where the former vice president dismounted his horse to plead for asylum from military arrest (before being sent on his way.)
Built in 1875 and occupied until the 1930s as Joseph Wylie and Company, the building holds historical significance as one of two large general merchandisers of that era. The shopfront was updated in the 1950’s, with only a single photograph remaining for the design team to reference in recreating the original character. Thanks to the utilization of historic tax credits, this asset to Chester’s Main Street will be renewed, with the renovated building providing 16 residential units on four floors, with amenities including an on-site gym and a rooftop terrace.
A commercial tenant space at street level faces The Hill. The project team also collaborated with the City of Chester to designate the adjacent public lot as a public green space to be used by the community.
